1940's Photo of Mr. Ames who in 1908, built the first cabin on the Bohemian Creek.. Photo provided by his daughter Alice, while visitng us in 2001 at the age of 95. This Rustic Lake Superior Stone
House was built between
1925-1934 during the depression by out-of-work lumberjacks. The project was funded by John Borbott, who owned the Knotty Club in Christmas, MI. Borbott hired masons ( brothers ) from Dollarville to build the house. Stones were hauled then by horses from the Autrain Beach on Lake Superior, the stonework taking over four years to finish. ![]() After the house was built, the property became a productive Apple farm, housing the men and horses. Borbott's family never used the house and was eventually abandoned in the years that followed. During the seventies after years of vacancy, squatters and abuse, the roof caved in, and the house was nearly destroyed when Michael Nolan of Marquette bought it. He and his family did a partial restore, but eventually returned to Marquette. Jeff and I took up where Mike had left off, gutted the home once again, finishing the restoration in 2004.
